Synopsis :At this meeting of the Y's Men's Club, the International Secretary of the International Association of Y's Men's Clubs speaks about the club's aims to serve the community with concern and goodwill in projects including one for spastic children and another for hole-in-the heart patients. He is then presented with a cheque for US$500 from the Singapore branch of the club for the building fund of the international headquarters in the US. Guest speaker at the meeting, State Advocate General of Singapore Mr Ahmad Ibrahim who is also the Chairman of the Singapore Muslim Advisory Board and a part-time lecturer in Muslim law at the University of Singapore then speaks about Malay customs and law. In the family law arena, the law relating to marriage and divorce is administered by syariah courts. It includes rules on polygamy and property ownership of married women. Mr Ahmad then touches on Malay customs on childbirth, children's education, learning of the Koran, circumcision and marriage. Arranged marriages are common and he describes the elaborate rituals that are observed from the engagement ceremony to the wedding day.
