  • Synopsis :

    "This is a recording of a speech, (in English, with Hokkien translation), by Malaysian Finance Minister Tan Siew Sin at a dinner hosted by the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK). Mr Tan gives his frank thoughts on the situation in Malaysia. He touches on:-
    1) The energy and entrerprise of Tan Lark Sye, SHKK Chairman;
    2) SHKK has a special responsibility to Singapore and Malaysia;
    3) Today Malaysia is no longer a 'foreign land but our permanent home'; a need for Malaysians to re-examine themselves to meet the challenges of the future and to give their undivided loyalty to Malaysia;
    4) Central Government uses every opportunity to meet  Singapore citizens to get to know each other to help remove sources of misunderstanding;
    5) Sharing the burdens and obligations of Malaysia to the full;"
    6) Fear that Central Government is less sympathetic to Singapore is groundless;
    7) Singapore will prosper and progress in own right and has fabulous future in Malaysia;
    7) Process of transition and  adjustments between Central Government and new states  need to be made in the coming months; process of transition can cause confusion and anxiety and gives rise to the wild rumours that Singapore could if she wishes, secede from Malaysia;
    8) The need for goodwill and understanding to solve the problems between Singapore and the Central Government;
    9) A call to those who are influential and affluent to take part in public life.
