  • Synopsis :

    This was a recording of a radio programme on press conferences given separately by Malaysian PM Tunku Abdul Rahman and PM Lee Kuan Yew at the Singapore Airport on 20 August 1964. The Tunku's press conference was held just before he departed for Kuala Lumpur following a 2-day visit to familiarise himself with the situation in Singapore after the recent racial disturbances that had taken place. PM Lee's press conference was held to answer further questions from the press after the Tunku's departure. Following a short statement, Tunku answered questions from the press such as:
    - Whether there would be any form of inquiry in the recent disturbances;
    - Whether Malaysia would be bringing the matter to the United Nations Security Council if matters got worse;
    - Whether Malaysia would accept Australia's offer of military help.

    Topics/questions raised during PM Lee's press conference included:
    - Whether PM Lee was happy with the talks he had with the Tunku;
    - Communalism and Communism;
