  • Synopsis :

    This recording contains extracts of non-Malay music items indigenous to the Federation of Malaya. The first five pieces are performed by different tribes of aborigines living in Malaya. 1) A song and dance by 'Orang Laut' or Sea Gypsies 2) Music on a type of harp made from a palm leaf 3) An aboriginal song 4) A type of flute music from South Perak 5) A song by a Negrito of North Perak. The next four pieces are Malayan Indian items. 6) An Indian choral hymn sung by Tamil music school children in Kuala Lumpur 7) Indian classical music on the violin 8) Indian drum music 9) Modern Hindi music. The next five pieces are Malayan Chinese items. 10) Percussion music for the Lion Dance 11) Cantonese opera by male and female vocalists 12) Chinese harp solo 13) Malayan Chinese ceremonial music usually played during wedding processions 14) Modern Mandarin song. The next three items are from the Portuguese Eurasian music repertoire. 15) 'Oh Maria' sung in Portuguese, English and Malay 16) 'Oh Malacca' performed in Portuguese and Malay 17) A song in Portuguese, English and Malay.
