Synopsis :This is a documentary on family and community life in Singapore. It features the Advisory Council on Family and Community Life and its recommendations on policies and measures to enable a more satisfying family and community life for Singaporeans.
It also incorporates comments and views by members of the Advisory Council, Minister for Community Development, Wong Kan Seng (黄根成); Senior Lecturer at Department of Social Work and Psychology, National University of Singapore, Ngiam Tee Liang (严世良); Member of Parliament, Prof Aline Wong (简丽中) and Senior Lecturer, National University of Singapore, Dr S. Vasoo (华素).
Areas of discussion include the following:
1. Setting up of child development centres to take care of children while their parents are at work. Benefits of child development centres are educational training, psychological enrichment and assurance for the parents of their children’s safety.
2. Starting home economic classes in schools to educate both male and female students on housekeeping. Learning that each household member plays a part in taking care of children is crucial, as child development centres are not enough to sustain the growing number of working adults with children.
3. Reviewing policies on divorce agreements and shifting the focus from alimony benefits to reconciliation.
4. Encourage communication and understanding between parents and children to narrow generation gaps.
5. Implementing a five-day work week to allow more time for family and recreational activities.
6. Building facilities and organising activities to promote more interaction and understanding among neighbours and friends. The ability for races to interact comfortably with one another will strengthen racial harmony.
7. Building a common identity among Singaporeans with shared national goals.
8. Taking care of the less well-off through financial and social support.
