  • Synopsis :

    The 1980 Chingay procession is held in the morning and the venue is at Ang Moh Kio (AMK) housing estate. Before the procession begins, the commentator provides some background details, such as origin of the word 'chingay', procession route, beginning at the junction of AMK Street 11 and AMK Avenue 4 and finishing at AMK Avenue 10. The procession is organised jointly by the People's Association (PA), the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board (STPB), Singapore National Pugilistic Federation. Commentary in this recording is in English and Mandarin.

    Once the procession begins, the presentations, including floats, move up, perform at the grandstand area, then moves on.  The items include:
    1. Joint effort of People's Association Choir, Dance Company and singing troupe of 50 dancers and 20 singers to herald in Year of the Monkey; balloons are released.
    2. Chin Woo Association Military Band also adds to rousing start of procession.
    3. Item 'On the Square' provided by PA Youth Movement, Singapore Armed Forces and Toa Payoh Community Centre.
    4. Group of girls with pom pom (no English commentary).
    5. First float with 'Year of the Monkey', featuring monkeys in various stances; contributed by designer William Lee, also honorary designer consultant to PA.
    6. Float with 12 monkeys to 'give 1980s a good start' for the new decade; slogan on float 'Work Harder for Brighter Future'.
    7. Item of 'Monkey King' provided by Kampong Glam Lion Dance Troupe.
    8. 'Telefun on Parade' organised jointly by PA and Yu Fu Community Centre; Telefun is popular programme in 1979.
    9. 'Spirit of Youth' presented by PA Youth Group, with 200 strong of youths forming series of four patterns and music provided by PA Pop Orchestra.
    10. 'Bridal Joy' presented by PA and Ang Mo Kio Centre, depicting traditional Chinese wedding in  'lighthearted and comic book setting with big headed dolls'.
    11. 'Hanuman the White Monkey' - from Ramayana - presented by Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society.
    12. Selection of nursery rhymes in songs and dance presented by PA Children's Club.

    The commentary adds that the first chingay procession in Singapore is held in 1973 organised by PA and Singapore National Pugilistic Federation. Since then the procession has dropped 'religious aspects' in the presentation, and replacing with items depicting 'national events'  to include participation by all cultural groups.

    13. Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School Band with 80 members; it is formed in 1970.
    14. Tari Tempurung (Coconut Dance) provided by Sriwarna.
    15. 'Fun and Fancy Free'  with 35 majorettes ushering in new year ; item presented by PA and Cheng Hwa Community Centre.
    Three floats one after the other:
    16. Float 'Hong Hai Erh' with Goddess of Mercy on the lotus, and Monkey God,  presented by Fok Sun Pugilistic Association.
    17. Float with 'Lady of the Moon' presented by Hainanese Opera Dramatic Society.
    18. Float of 'Heavenly Blessings' from Singapore Min Chong Sports Club.
    19. Item titled 'Mirror' with men in colourful turbans singing and dancing to beat of drums.
    20. Item titled 'Eastern Sea Palace' involving Monkey God presented by Singapore Phoenix Dance Troupe.
    21. 'Pipes and Drums' presented by Singapore Pipers, which is formed in 1967.
    22. Item from 'Never Never Land' with Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, Wendy and her 2 brothers.
    23. 'Fisherman and Cockle Demon' performing on stilts, is presented by MacPherson Community Centre.
    24. Bali Muruga with couple on float presented by Kamala Club.
    25. 'Flaming Mountain' featuring Monkey God, his master and his two fellow disciples and Iron Fan Princess, presented by three communiy centres - Geylang East, Mountbatten and Tanjong Katong.
    26. 'World of Dr Doolittle' presented by PA and Vigilante Corps.
    27. 'Precious Gifts' about a childless couple who are rewarded with two children after saving injured sparrow, presented by Joo Chiat CC and Paya Lebar CC.
    28. 'Flag Force' presented by Vigilante Corps; these flags are traditionally this 'the spirit of chingay'; men balancing the flags usually between 8-12 metres in height, on one hand, shoulder or with the mouth.  
    29. 'Spiders' featuring Monkey God saving fellow disciple Piggy from spider demons, presented by PA and Vigilante Corps.
    30. 5 Northern and Southern Lions vying to snatch ribbon ball, presented by Singapore Hok Kiaw Athletic Association.
    31. Dragon Dance presented by Nik Kwang Pugilistic Association.
    32. Final item 'Newton Circus at Peak Hours' -  gymnastics display by Singapore Armed Forces Acrobatic Troupe - the Setcrobats.
