Synopsis :The performance - First ASEAN Song Festival (or Pesta Lagu ASEAN Pertama) is held in Kuala Lumpur on 31 October 1981. As the artistes, 18 of them, come on stage one after another, the presenter, Susan Ng, introduces the song festival. Its objectives are to 'promote the cultural development of ASEAN through songs and social interaction for composers and singers, also serves to emphasize wealth and diversity of our tradition and cultural heritage within ASEAN region'. It will be a yearly event, hosted in rotation by the 5 ASEAN nations.
The first song festival comprises three parts - first is popular songs, followed by traditional ones and the last is more popular songs. The line-up is as follows:
1) Curtain raiser is a Thai pop song - 'Sao Transistor' (Transistor Farm Girl) (in Thai).
2) Singapore: 'Bimbinglah Dia' (Guide Him), singer Zaleha Hamid (in Malay).
3) Philippines: 'Landas' (Destiny), singer Marcus Sison (in Tagalog).
4) Indonesia: 'Pariwisata' (Tourism), singer Jamal Merdac(sic) (in Indonesian).
5) Malaysia: 'Kemana Ku Bawa Diri' (Where Do I Find Solace), singer Lenny Lim (in Malay).
Part 2: Traditional Songs:
6) Singapore: 'Kisah Di Geylang Serai' (The Story of Geylang Serai), singer Zaleha Hamid (in Malay).
7) Philippines: 'Hindi Kita Malimot', Marcus Sison (sic) and another singer (in Tagalog).
8) Indonesia: 'Sik Sik Si Batu Maningkam Ande Ande Lumut' (Wonderful Precious Stone), singers Jamal Merdac (sic) and another singer (in Indonesian), composer present.
9) Malaysia: 'Wau Bulan' (Moon Kite), singers Azlina Aziz and Lenny Lim (in Malay).
10) Thailand: 'Siang Thien' (Candelight), singer Tipwan Pipibal (sic) (in Thai).
Part 3: Popular Songs
11) Indonesia: 'Dirimu Satu' (You the Only One), singer Belian Huroto (sic) (in Indonesian).
12) Malaysia: 'Aku dan Kesepian' (Me and My Loneliness), singer Azlina Azia (in Malay).
13) Philippines: 'Naniniwala Ako Sa Yo' (I Have Faith in You), singer Lelio Vittal (sic) (in Tagalog).
14) Thailand: 'Sud Ngao' (Alone), singer Tipwan Pipibal (sic) (in Thai).
15) Singapore: 'Feng Ling Zhi Lien' (Love of the Bell), singer Lena Lim (in Mandarin).
The song festival ends with a finale number ''Rasa Rasa Sayang' rendered with all the artistes.
