Synopsis :1. Singapore and Brunei today signed an open skies agreement, making it the first within ASEAN. The agreement comes just a month after Singapore's first bilateral open-skies agreement with the United States. And today's signing with Brunei is a step towards greater competition of air services in the region.
2. The Prime Minister says self renewal is not a painless process but one that's necessary for the government to stay in touch with the people. He said all MPs especially the new ones, have already been told to look for fresh candidates for the PAP to field in the next General Election. Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong was speaking at a thank you dinner for 18 retired PAP MPs tonight, where he paid tribute to their contributions.
3. A hospital to serve the north-western part of Singapore. To be ready in the year 2005, it'll be the third regional hospital and will serve those living in the Woodlands, Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Panjang areas.
4. Singapore reaffirms its support for international law as the best way to settle trade and territorial disputes. Deputy Prime Minister Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam cited Singapore's bid for a non-permanent seat, on the UN Security Council in the year 2001 as a testimony of the country's commitment.
5. Calm returns to the Indonesian capitol after violence that marred the end to the election capaigning yesterday.
6. In South Korea, clashes broke out between riot police and radical students, as the funeral of a fellow demonstrator got underway.
7. Thousands of people flying to and from Hong Kong today had their travel plans disrupted. Cathay Pacific and its sister company, Dragon Airlines suspended operations on their fleet of Airbus A3'30-300 jetliners, after a series of failures with the aircraft's Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines. In Singapore, the Civil Aviation Authority says so far today, two Cathay Pacific flights departing from Changi Airport have not cancelled.
8. French leaders are worried about large numbers of undecided voters, ahead of tomorrow's first round parliamentary elections. Prime Minister Alain Juppe has predicted a difficult first round for the ruling conservative. And he is concerned those undecided votes could be scattered among a record number of candidates.
9. In Brazil, a shocking incident when a kidnapper came face-to-face with the police.
10. Two shows and an 18-day long charity drive - that's what the National Kidney Foundation has organised to try and raise $3 million for kidney patients. Popular Hongkong, Taiwan as well as local artistes will be making their appearances in the charity shows. Among those making their debut at the annual NKF event - songwriter and producer Jonathan Lee, who'll be performing with local artiste Zoe Tay. The public can call the hotline during the shows, which will be telecast live, to pledge donations. The money raised will go towards helping the 1,000 kidney patients under NKF's care. The NKF has so far raised about 1 million dollars through calls to its hotline.
11. Taxi commuters will soon pay lower fares if they ride with others. The new Share-A-Cab pilot scheme starts on the 1st of June.
12. Singapore does not lack entreprenuerial talents, going by the findings of a national youth survey. If showed that 70 percent of young Singaporeans aim to set up their own businesses.
13. Mainboard listed, CAM International's chief executive Chew Chuan Seng, was charged in court today with criminal breach of trust, involving 1.45 million dollars. Better known as Raymond Chew, the 39 year old's out on a 1.5 million dollar bail. He's alleged to have misappropriated the funds in March. Chew was granted the bail on condition that he surrenders his travel documents to the Commercial Affairs Department. He is also to report to the CAD whenever required. His case will be re-mentioned on 18 July. If found guilty, the maximum sentence Chew may receive is life imprisonment.
14. Soccer and the pre World Cup qualifier. Lebanon beat Singapore 2-1 at the National Stadium this evening. The visitors were 1-0, up at half-time, but Singapore equalised through Steven Tan's 63rd minute penalty. However, 5 minutes from the end, the visitors grabbed the decisive goal to end Singapore's hope of reaching the next round of qualifiers.
15. Hockey - In the Singapore Hockey Federation's Premier League match, defending champion Indian Association continued their unbeaten run this season with a resounding 5-1 defeat of Jansenites.
16. Now the colonial golf tournament in Texas. South African, David Frost birdied the 18th hole, to tie the lead with Paul Goy-dos and Brad Faxon midway into the tournament. Frost fired a 7 under-par 63. And Man of the moment, Tiger Woods is also making a strong bid for the top.
17. South Korea have won a place in the final of the World Badminton Championship in Glasgow, setting up a grudge match with China. The Koreans had earlier lost a group match, against the Chinese. They booked their final berth after thrashing Denmark 4-1. In the other semi-final, China earned their spot in the last two, when they beat Indonesia 3-2.
