Synopsis :1. Police have smashed what's believed to be one of the biggest 4-D syndicates in Singapore. Yesterday, 17 men and women including the ring leaders, a husband and wife team were arrested.
2. In world news, Indonesia's army chief has defended the military's tough stand on dissent saying it was to maintain national unity. General Faisa: 1 Tanjung today said the army cannot sacrifice the nation's stability only to be tolerant towards concepts and actions which cannot be measured.
3. And China's army has given its backing to President Jiang Zemin. Hardline generals Liu Huaqing and Zhang Zhen today joined the other two vice chairmen of the Central Military Commission to pledge their loyalty to Mr. Jiang. The move has calmed fears that the older guard was refusing to fall into line after the death of paramount leader Deng Xiaoping.
4. And the ashes of Mr. Deng have been moved from his home in Beijing to Shanghai. A convoy of 13 cars left the late leader's home early today carrying family members and his ashes. The cars drove in procession to the Zhongnan-hai government compound just off Tiananmen Square and later left for the airport. A Hong Kong television station has reported that Mr. Deng's ashes would be scattered into the eastern and western sea around Shanghai.
5. South African President Nelson Mandela, in the Philippines on the first leg of his asian tour has urged Asia and africa to develop stronger trade links.
6. The toll from Iran's devestating earthquake has risen to 500 dead and 2 thousand injured. As many as 36 thousand people are also homeless. The quake totally wiped out more than 100 villages in the mountainous Ardebil region. Freezing weather and heavy snow are hampering rescue operations. And a quake measuring 6 on the Richter scale, has also struck China's Xinjiang region killing two and destroying thousands of homes. In January, double earthquakes in the area claimed 12 lives and destroyed 14 thousand homes.
7. The Albanian government has resigned in the face of popular revolt. But the move doesn't signal fresh elections which the opposition as been demanding. Instead, president sali berisha says his party will form a new government to be approved by parliament. He made the decision despite riots in the port city of vloray which left nine people dead.
8. Expatriate living in Thailand doesn't always mean leasing a home. Our correspondent Geraldine Goh found out more Singaporeans working in the Thai capital are owning their homes away from home. And the trend is catching on among expatriates with the Thai government's plan to further liberalise housing rules. Currently foreigners can only own up to 40 percent of units in a condominium project.
9. In Serangoon Gardens, a four-year legal tussle over the right to cross a footpath ended in a win-win situation. Residents of Jalan Chulek, Hythe and Worthing Roads finally have a new 198 thousand dollar underpass that helps them get to the main road.
10. The crew member who died in a cruise fire late Friday night has been identified as Joseph Fornolles. The 28 year old Filipino was found at around 2am in the engine room immediately after the fire was put out. Police say he was found with severe burns and was pronounced dead by the ship's doctor. Nine crew members were also injured. The luxury cruise ship Superstar Gemini is currently undergoing repairs. Police and maritime officials are investigating the cause of the fire which started in the engine room.
11. The Speak Mandarin Campaign home page on the internet is said to be among the more popular home page sites. It's been accessed more than 200 thousand times since its launch last September. To further encourage internet users to pick up Mandarin the Committee To Promote The Use Of Mandarin has decided to introduce another new service this month.

14. Boxing veteran Sugar Ray Leonard says he will go back to retirement after his comeback turned into a short-lived disaster when he was stopped by Puerto Rico's Hector Camacho. 40 year old Leonard returned to the ring for the first time since a 1991 loss to Terry Norris.
The fight was dominated entirely by Camacho - he finally ended it one minute and eight seconds into the fifth round of their middleweight bout. Camacho slammed Leonard off-balance in the first round and kept him on the defensive, with Leonard stumbling to the canvas during one of many retreats. So Leonard's career ends again with a record of 36 triumphs and three defeats and one draw.
15. World football law-makers have said 'no' to television replays to help referees make decisions in matches. The International Board decided unanimously at their annual conference in belfast not to resort to the cameras. It also rejected suggestions that a second referee be introduced. But the board did agree to several rule changes. One of them - that goalkeepers will no longer be allowed to handle the ball directly from throw-ins.
16. In S-league football at home, the Tampines Rovers Stags and the Balestier Central Tigers are two teams that have employed contrasting strategies. While the Tigers are counting an older experienced players to put up this year's challenge the Stage have opted for some of the best youth talents.
