  • Synopsis :

    The United Nations (UN) Security Council unanimously welcoming Singapore into the council on 20 September 1965.

    Proposal to include Singapore in the council by Malaysia's delegate to the UN Security Council, Radhakrishnan Ramani; the United Kingdom's representative for the Commonwealth warmly welcoming Singapore to Security Council and wishing success to the separate governments of Singapore and Malaysia; members voting for Singapore's entry into Security Council; unanimous vote from all members; Deputy Prime Minister Dr Toh Chin Chye and Minister for Foreign Affairs S.Rajaratnam thanking Mr Ramani, and accepting congratulations from other representatives; new chairman for Security Council Dr Fanfani proposing that Singapore joins UN; strong applause signifying support and agreement from all members; Singapore officially initiated into UN; DPM Dr Toh leading Singapore representatives to seats assigned to them; flag-raising ceremony at UN building to mark Singapore's entry into UN; UN Secretary-General U Thant giving opening speech; DPM Dr Toh watching with pride as Singapore's flag is raised; and reporters taking pictures of ceremony.
