  • Synopsis :

    1)   Singapore-Parliament: First Deputy Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong talks on several issues. First on National Ideology, he says a Green Paper will be submitted to Parliament and to eventually produce a ‘document crystallising consensus’ and the ‘basis for evolving a Singapore identity’. He continues that he and his team now have complete oversight of the government as the Prime Minister has transferred power smoothly. He adds he now understands clearly PM Lee Kuan Yew’s ‘passion for self-renewal’, which is to ensure ‘durable leadership without which Singapore could not survive’. He then tells all People’s Action Party and Opposition Members of Parliaments to speak up ‘out of conviction and never out of convenience’.  (00:00:54)

    2)   Singapore-Parliament: During question time, Minister for Trade and Industry BG Lee Hsien Loong, replying to concerns over increasing costs in the business sector, says the government implements policies ‘sensitively’ and not ‘blindly and makes adjustment at appropriate time.  (00:03:19)

    3)   Singapore: Ministry of Community Development Statement says a new law ensuring that homes for the aged maintained properly comes into force on 1 February. The statement provides details of the law and the regulations for providing the homes.  (00:04:23)

    4)   United States-NATO: Both United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation welcome Soviet Union’s announcement, at the Security Conference in Vienna, to pull out its ‘nuclear tactical weapons’ in two years. US adds the Soviet is following what NATO has done earlier, while NATO adds information given is not enough.  (00:05:03)

    5)   China-Vietnam: Vietnam Embassy in Beijing says, at talks between the First Deputy Foreign Ministers of China and Vietnam this week, it is agreed China’s Foreign Minister will meet up with Vietnam’s Foreign Minister, but without details of date and venue.  (00:06:36)

    6)   Philippines-Cambodia: Philippines Foreign Minister Raul Mangalpus, in Brunei for an ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting, says he believes the Cambodian issue could have a political solution by this year, although there are differences among countries involved.  (00:07:09)

    7)   Thailand-Indonesia: In Jakarta during private talks, Thai Prime Minister General Chatichai Choonhavan and Indonesia’s President Suharto are agreed to extend their support to the coming meeting on Cambodia to be held in Jakarta.  (00:07:37)

    8) P  hilippines: Military troops have killed 20 communist rebels in Davao Del Nort Province in Southern Philippines after a three-hour battle.  (00:08:03)

    9)   Sri Lanka: Four members of the ruling United National Party are shot dead and eight others wounded, and one victim is standing in the upcoming general election. Sinhalese rebels are suspected to be responsible for this outbreak of violence.  (00:08:24)

    10)   United States: Hours before his inauguration, President-elect George Bush comments on several issues. One is he is not holding any immediate summit with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev about arms agreement. On peace in the Middle East, he would continue the dialogue between United States and the Palestine Liberation Organization, and calls on the PLO to remember its pledge on renouncing terrorism. On domestic policy, he stresses again his ‘top priority’ is reducing the deficit of the Federal Budget.  (00:08:44)

    11)  Israel-Occupied Territories: Israeli Foreign Minister, Yitzhak Rabin is now suggesting granting self rule to Palestinians in the Occupied Territories and holding peace talks with a joint Palestinian-Jordanian group, but not with the Palestine Liberation Organization.  (00:09:38)

    12)  Czechoslovakia: Protesters are out demanding free election and release of political prisoners, but end up with riot police beating them and leading 40 people into police vans and buses.  (00:11:42)

    13)   Estonia-Soviet Union: Soviet Republic of Estonia has passed a new law on adopting Estonian Language as the official language of the country.  (00:12:08)

    14)   Poland: At a news conference, Polish leader General Jaruzelski says the banned trade union, Solidarity may be legalised subject to it accepting a main condition.  (00:12:57)

    15)   South Africa: Chris Heunis, Constitutional Development Minister, has been appointed as ‘Caretaker President’ to assume the office of President P. W. Botha, who has a mild stroke on Wednesday.  (00:14:04)

    16)   Scotland: A public enquiry into the explosion of the Piper Alpha oil rig in July 1988 has commenced.  (00:19:50)

    17)   United States: Federal Bureau of Investigation agents tracking down fraud has taken them to Chicago and to the country’s two largest commodities exchanges.  (00:21:02)

    18)   Singapore: At the Construction Instruction Development Board graduation ceremony this evening, General Manager Chow Kok Fong says the construction sector is still not focusing sufficiently on training its workforce. Seven percent of the workforce is in construction, but they attend only one percent of 700,000 training places endorsed by the Skills Development Fund.  (00:22:39)

    19)   Singapore-Japan: A group of Singapore jewellery makers are off to Tokyo and Osaka to participate in the 3rd Singapore Jewellery Exhibition organized by the Trade Development Board.  (00:23:56)

    21)   Sports-Tennis: Australian Open Tennis Championships, Melbourne - Defending champion Mats Wilander lost in a second round match to unseeded Ramesh Krishnan from India 6-3, 6-2, 7-6.  (00:25:45)

    22)   Singapore: Announcements of roads closed to traffic in Chinatown from tomorrow until eve of Lunar New Year.  (00:27:35)

    23)   Weather: Showers expected over several areas in the afternoon. Temperatures between 24 and 31 degrees. (00:30:24)
