Synopsis :1) Singapore: Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew speaks on the ‘Emergence of the NICs and its Implications’ at the opening of the Global Strategies Conference and following his speech he takes questions from the floor. He says the rise of Japan and the Asian NICs, including Singapore is among the most major international developments in the last 20 years, but with market restrictions in the United States and Western Europe today, the NICs’ growth would slow down. He points out bigger countries, like China and Japan, may revert to the old way of building up strength and growth through territorial expansion. He stresses the principle of free and fair trade must be observed otherwise there is the risk of destabilizing world peace and stability. (00:00:51)
2) Indonesia: The Economy Minister told a business conference in Bali that the government would soon announce its programme to introduce sweeping reforms to de-regulate several sectors of the country’s economy. The government’s intention is to make Indonesia a newly-industrialisted country by the end of the next decade. Another story: Australia’s Foreign Minister, Gareth Evans is in Jakarta to discuss with his Indonesian counterpart, Ali Alatas on a ‘joint zone of cooperation’ for petroleum and mineral extraction in the Timor Sea. 3) West Germany-Soviet Union: Chancellor Helmut Kohl has his first meeting with Soviet Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow. Before he leaves Bonn, Kohl says both are agreed to ‘open a new chapter of frankness, trust and cooperation’. (00:10:17)
4) Afghanistan: The Nationalists have captured a major provincial capital, Mahmud Raqi, close to Kabul, the 6th provincial capital to have been taken by them. Fighting is fierce leaving about a 100 Kabul regime soliders dead. (00:10:37)
5) Yugoslavia: The Communist Party’s Central Committee has published an action plan hoping to unite the party, strengthen the Federal Government and help to resolve the country’s political crisis. Some sources believe the document is a compromise to meet the demands of the Serbian Communist Chief, Milosevic. (00:11:05)
6) PLO-Middle East: PLO chief, Yasser Arafat and the leaders of Egypt, Jordan and Iraq, after meeting up, have worked out an Arab position for a peace plan in the West Bank ready for talks with Israel. PLO Yasser Arafat and Egypt’s Mubarak arrived in Baghdad only yesterday to talk with Iraq’s Saddam Hussein. (00:12:25)
7) Israel: The two main rival political parties finally meet for a pre-election debate. On the agenda is a Middle East settlement, but a new element has emerged in King Hussein’s comments that he prefers Labour’s Shimon Peres and his peace proposals. Experts say all Israelis know for months how they are going to vote and tonight’s debate and furore over King Hussein’s remarks are unlikely to change their mind. (00:13:27)
8) Poland:General Jarulzelski has laid down his terms to allow the banned trade union, Solidarity, be legal again. The Polish leader adds that force would, be used if necessary, to put down political unrest. (00:15:17)
9) Central America: Hurricane Joan has lashed across four countries of Central America over the weekend, but the worst hit is Nicaragua. It has left in its wake a trail of destruction. It is a monumental task and requires generous aid to rebuild what it has demolished. (00:15:41)
10) Malaysia: Seven factories in Perak have voluntarily stopped producing white rice noodles, which could be the cause of food poisoning to help in investigations. 12 children have died believed to be from suspected food poisoning. Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamed has said health authorities are treating the matter very seriously. (00:21:27)
11) Australia-Hong Kong: Police in Australia have seized the largest shipment of heroin ever smuggled into the country and have smashed a Hong Kong drug racket by working undercover. 22 people have been arrested in Australia and Hong Kong. (00:22:18)
12) Singapore: Two cases in this item: 1st case is of unemployed Omar bin Abdullah being charged with the attempted murder of 11-year old, Chua Cheng Siang, last Friday. 2nd case is of 8 Thai nationals sentenced to 6 months jail each for trying to enter Singapore illegally; a man and a woman are sentenced to a total of 5 years jail for attempting in bring the illegal Thai immigrants.
