    1) Britain: Drugs company, Glaxo puts in $70 million to expand and improve its plant in Jurong over the next two years. This is to enable the company to increase production of ranitidine, used in anti-ulcer drugs and in great demand.  (00:00:49)
    2) OPEC: The oil cartel’s meeting in Madrid fails to set new production quotas and it expects prices to fall further, having already fallen about a third since April.  (00:01:41)
    3) Soviet Union-Lithuania: The Soviet has produced a draft law, which proposes changes to the country’s constitution, and it could lead to radical changes to the Soviet Union’s political structure. Mikhail Gorbachev says the proposed changes are essential for his reforms. In the Republic of Lithuania, the reforms have led to a popular movement emerging and there is new confidence as the communist party is prepared to make concessions to the demands of the nationalists.  (00:02:21)
    4) Central America: Hurricane Joan has hit Nicaragua and Costa Rica killing more than 30 people so far and causing much damages and destruction. Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega has appealed to the international community for help, and Cuba, closest, has sent a team to help.  (00:03:59)
    5) PLO-Israel: The Israeli election for a new Prime Minister next week and a possible future peace settlement galvanises Jordan, Egypt and PLO into quick reaction. Egypt and PLO travel to Amman to meet so as to sound each other out and coordinate Arab positions on a peace settlement and the PLO wanting self-rule in the West Bank.  (00:05:20)
    6) Philippines: President Aquino has denied allegations that Philippines has a secret deal with US which would allow American bases to remain in the Philippines after 1991. Foreign Secretary, Raul Manglapus is criticized for agreeing to a too low compensation. The critics condemn the agreement as a sell-out.  (00:06:28)
    7) Chile: The President, General Augusto Pinochet has accepted the resignation of his top political adviser, the Interior Minister, who resigned hours after the President said he would stay on even after a cabinet reshuffle. He has said repeatedly there would be no change in the military’s political programme.  (00:07:55)
    8) Singapore: At a dinner of the Building and Estate Management Society, Minister for National Development, S. Dhanabalan explains why most unmarried singles are disqualified from owning HDB flats.  (00:08:54)
    9) Singapore: The International Conference on Global Strategies will be opened tomorrow by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, who will speak on the role of the NICs in the world economy. Details of the conference are outlined.  (00:10:35)
    10) Singapore: The Economic Development Board (EDB) says Reuters is now extended operational headquarters status in Singapore, and will be an important centre providing technical, financial and marketing activities to other countries. It is investing $10 million over three years in Singapore.  (00:12:18)
    11) Singapore: Police have arrested six men alleged to be involved in the murder of a 25-year old man last Friday. They will be charged in court tomorrow. But the police are still looking for ten other suspects.  (00:12:50)
    12) Singapore: Minister of State for Finance and Foreign Affairs, BG George Yeo urges all Singaporeans to be proud of their past without their becoming narrow-minded, bigoted or intolerant as the different communities here all share a common future. He is the Guest-of-Honour at a celebration of Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday organized by Jama’ath.  (00:14:07)

    14) Singapore: MP for Kampong Glam, Loh Meng See says three of the six Community Centres (CCs) in the constituency are to be phased out.     20) Singapore: Announcements: The Singapore Armed Forces will be holding military exercises in nine areas and Bedok Jetty next week. The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) will be carrying out a live firing exercise at Pulau Pawai and Pulau Senang next Monday to Wednesday. It will also hold a demolition exercise Pulau Senang next Friday to Sunday.  (00:25:03)
