Synopsis :1) Singapore: At the 2nd Anniversary celebrations of the Ang Mo Kio West pilot town council, Senior Minister of State for National Development, Dr Lee Boon Yang discloses the government is inviting private sector firms to join the HDB to form an estate management company to offer services to town councils. The new company would start serving the first batch of constituencies forming town councils by next January or February. (00:00:54)
2) Singapore-Malaysia: Deputy Director-General of the Malaysian Highway Authority, Yeoh Eng Mun disclosed that the number of vehicles that could be cleared by the Immigration and Customs Checkpoints at the Causeway will more than doubled by early 1990 as an interim causeway is expected to be completed by then. 3) Philippines: The country is acquiring 20 helicopters from US to strengthen its air force fight against the Communist rebels. The air force now has a fleet of some 80 helicopters most of them aging. (00:03:56)
4) West Berlin: Finance Ministers of 7 industrial nations, the G7, issued a statement saying they have agreed to ease the debt crisis of 18 Third World countries and have reaffirmed their commitment to coordinate fiscal policies. (00:04:26)
5) Lebanon: Muslim and Christian factions of the interim government are still struggling for control. The government is led by Christian General Michel Aoun, appointed by outgoing President Amin Gemayel. (00:05:56)
6) Soviet Union-Armenia-Azerbaijan: Protest strikes in Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh are still continuing even as Soviet troops are sent in to stop the ethnic unrest. Armenia is urging Moscow to guarantee the safety of the Armenians in the disputed region. (00:07:23)
7) Angola: The Marxist Government has launched a fresh offensive against the rebel forces, UNITA, scoring military successes, killing some 1,300 of the rebels and recapturing a strategic town. (00:08:37)
8) Japan: Emperor Hirohito has improved slightly today. His condition is stable after receiving a fresh blood transfusion. (00:10:39)
9) Australia: Western Australia has been hit by the worst storm in 40 years, which causes widespread damage in many parts, but the worst hit is Perth. (00:10:53)
10) Singapore: Opening the Bukit Timah Community Centre this evening, 1st Deputy Prime Minister, Goh Chok Tong notes that today’s CCs with their modern facilities and activities have attracted better-off Singaporeans, and he urges the CCs to remember the needs of lower-income Singaporeans in their programmes. 11) Singapore: 2nd Deputy Prime Minister, Ong Teng Cheong, speaking at the anniversary celebrations of a clan association, Singapore has done well as nation, economically and socially, but these alone are not good enough. 13) Singapore: A trade mission to Iran to take part in an international fair in Tehran has resulted in Singapore winning contracts worth $50 million of refurbishing and extension works on 17 hotels. A Memorandum of Understanding for co-operation in various business deals has also been signed with one of the largest companies in Iran. (00:23:14)
14) Singapore: Dr Seet Ai Mee, a former President of the Deaf, officially opened a Centre for the Hearing Impaired to mark the International Day of the Deaf, which is today. The centre first conceived by her and the first of its kind in Singapore, is to serve as a place for recreation, teaching and learning. (00:23:41)
15) Singapore: The Committee on Performing Arts under the Advisory Council on Culture and the Arts today visited the Singapore Chinese Kang Huay Kuan and the Indian Fine Arts Society. The Committee’s Chairman, Robert Iau says efforts should be made to ‘develop a cross-section of traditional arts’ and not to just focus on western culture’. (00:24:45)
