  • Synopsis :

    1)  Singapore: When nominations of candidates for the general election closed at noon today, the People’s Action Party (PAP) is returned unopposed in 11 constituencies. On polling day on September 3, 70 Parliamentary seats will be contested by 141 candidates from eight political parties and four independents. Among the Opposition, the Workers’ Party is fielding the most candidates, 32, and next is the Singapore Democratic Party with 18.  (00:00:50)

    2) Singapore: The 11 seats returned unopposed are three GRCs of Cheng San, Hong Kah and Toa Payoh and two Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) of Bukit Timah and Tanglin. Three ministers returned unopposed are Lee Yock Suan, Yeo Cheow Tong and Wong Kan Seng in the three GRCs accordingly.  (00:01:51)

    3) Singapore: Ten Cabinet ministers have to contest in the polls on September 3. Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew  is challenged in Tanjong Pagar by an independent opponent. 1DPM Goh Chok Tong and his two team mates in Marine Parade GRC face Singapore Justice Party opponents.. Mr Goh says to reporters the PAP is not yet in government and has to fight and be returned as government. 2DPM Ong Teng Cheong has a straight fight with SDP candidate in Kim Keat. In Sembawang GRC, Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam with two team mates faces UPF opponents. He says it is a healthy sign that more than half of the seats are contested. S. Dhanabalan also has a straight fight in SMC constituency with Workers’ Party (WP) opponent. Dr Ahmad Mattar and two team mates in Brickworks GRC contest against WP candidates. S  Jayakumar with his team mates in Bedok GRC faces WP’s opponents. Dr Richard Hu is in straight fight in Kreta Ayer against WP’s opponent. BG Lee Hsien Loong is challenged by an independent candidate in Teck Ghee. Dr Yeo Ning Hong in Kim Seng constituency is in straight fight with WP.  (00:02:23)

    4) Singapore: Opposition leaders contesting the general election give their views related to the election. Chiam See Tong, SDP leader says the task of the opposition is to prevent Singapore from taking the wrong road. Harbans Singh, UPF leader, says the last election was the watershed one,PM Lee is wrong. Ken Sunn of NSP says the party’s chances are good, the Whampoa residents know how to make a good choice this time. SJP’s Ramasamy says his party is fighting for the rights of the people, let the people elect SJP and nobody born to be MPs. Dr Lee Siew Choh, former leader of Barisan Sosialis, is standing under the WP banner in Eunos GRC with Francis Seow and Mohd Khalid. PKMS’s Mohd Awang is standing in Jurong.  (00:10:48)

    5) Singapore: After nomination closed, WP Secretary-General, J. B. Jeyaretnam holds a news conference talks of the people choosing between more freedom for all or more repression and less freedom and opportunities for all. The WP will raise various issues during the campaign period, such as education policy, health care, housing, and care of the aged and the sick, but he adds the overhanging issue is ‘where do we go from here, we are at the cross roads’.  (00:13:47)

    6) Singapore: The Returning Officer for the General Election explains about posting of poll cards for voters in the 50 contested electoral divisions, about voting for Singaporeans with change of address, people who will not receive poll cards and setting up of enquiry centres.  (00:15:40)

    7) United States: President Reagan has signed the historic Omnibus Trade Bill before congressmen and dock workers at Long Beach Harbour. He says the Bill will introduce sweeping changes to US trade practices, opening world markets to US products  and ensure fair play abroad. Japan and South Korea express disappointments over  the Bill.  (00:18:58)

    8) Burma: The Government has lifted the martial law in Rangoon, seen as the government making a gesture of peace to the people after protests by thousands in the capital this week. The new President, Maung Maung, is scheduled to address the nation this evening.  (00:19:49)

    9) Pakistan: Troops are on alert in Islamabad and Karachi to prevent a possible outbreak of clashes between Shi’ite and Sunni Muslims as the Shi’ites today hold religious processions in the two cities.  (00:20:21)

    10) Ethiopia-Somalia: Some 200 Ethiopian prisoners of war have been freed by Somalia in an exchange of prisoners as part of a peace agreement signed in April by the two countries.  (00:20:51)

    11) Poland: Riot police have gone into a coalmine to break up a strike by miners demanding recognition of the banned trade union, Solidarity and pay rise. Military and police patrols are increased, curfews imposed in several towns, 50 people reported detained. These are the authorities’ tough efforts to crackdown on the current wave of strikes by coal miners, shipyard and other workers spreading throughout the country. But workers are not deterred.  (00:22:17)

    12) United Nations: UN Secretary-General, Peres de Cuellar is in Geneva to meet leaders of the Turkish and Greek Cypriots to discuss their conflict, a 14-year old problem dividing the country.  (00:23:22)

    13) Koreas: North and South Korea have agreed to meet again on Friday to discuss their deep differences, including the Olympics in Seoul. Their series of talks in Panmunjom has been fruitless.  (00:24:25)

    14) Greece: The traditional Olympic flame is lit in a ceremony in the ruins of Olympia. The symbolic flame will be handed to a South Korean delegation in Athens on Thursday and from there it will go by air to South Korea.  (00:24:53)

    15) Weather: Showers over several areas tomorrow afternoon, and temperatures ranging between 25 and 31 degrees.  (00:27:59)
