Synopsis :This edition of ASEAN Half Hour features a selection of music from Singapore. The country's multi-racial character is reflected in the music that is played and danced to in Singapore. The music comprises songs and instrumental pieces from the main ethnic communities like the Chinese, Malays and Indians. There are also influences from the Western repertoire.
The original music of the Chinese, Malays and Indians was highly developed and has now become pure forms. There have been attempts to modernise traditional music and blend the old with the new.
The programme features excerpts from the traditional Malay folk song 'Lenggang Kangkung and 'Keroncong Singapura', a vocal piece of Indonesian origin that uses stringed instruments like the violin, guitar and ukulele. The keroncong piece is sung in Mandarin. Also featured are a rhythmic traditional Indian fisherman's song and an English vocal piece, 'There's a New Moon Arising' which centres around Singapore's flag.
