  • Synopsis :

At an event to announce the Singapore Refining Company's (SRC) refinery expansion programme, the company's chairman Tan Boon Teik speaks about SRC's expansion plans which involve high technology and considerable capital outlay. The project requires the services of skilled engineers, supervisors and operators.

In his speech, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Goh Keng Swee says that the four largest customers of petroleum products from Singapore are Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Australia. The list of customers includes the People's Republic of China, the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States of America.

Dr Goh outlines how Singapore reached the happy position of being the third largest refining centre in the world by having a good geographical location and maintaining efficiency by introducing improvements. As a result, companies here produce a wide range of petroleum products and have adequate stocks. Whenever any country has a shortage of these products our companies are able to supply the products to them at competitive prices. Besides the SRC, other companies like Shell and Esso also have expansion programmes.

He adds that Singapore's political stability makes it an attractive place for foreign investments.
