Session synopsis -

Today, Orchard Road is the prime shopping belt of Singapore and a bustling street lined with megamalls. It is now unrecognisable from its earlier incarnation as a suburban residential and commercial street populated with shophouses for a large part of the 20th century. What was Orchard Road like in the late 40s and 50s, when colonial rule in Singapore was reflected in the physical and social landscape of Singapore? Where would expatriates and locals frequent in Orchard Road during this period? Join us as participants share their memories on colonial establishments such as the Pavilion Cinema, Mont D’or, motor car firms and more.

Admission is free. Please email Diyana Yusoff at Diyana_yusoff@nlb.gov.sg to register for Cakap Heritage: Colonial Days of Orchard.

Limited seating for 50pax.

A collaboration between the National Archives of Singapore and the National Museum of Singapore, this exhibition brings the visitor through the tumultuous period of post-war Singapore up until before August 1965. Using archival materials such as photographs, film and oral history recordings, as well as a selection of artefacts, the exhibition provides a glimpse of the cultural dynamism on the ground, against the backdrop of the awakening of a political consciousness that contributed to the determined struggle for de-colonisation and self-rule.
