NANYANG GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL TO OFFER
THE INTEGRATED PROGRAMME IN 2004
1. The Ministry of Education has approved the proposal from Nanyang Girls High School (NYGHS) to offer the integrated programme (IP) in partnership with The Chinese High School (TCHS) and Hwa Chong Junior College (HCJC) from 1 January 2004. NYGHS will be offering the IP curriculum that has been developed by TCHS and HCJC.
2. Up to 180 students from NYGHS will be selected at the end of Secondary 2 for the Hwa Chong IP. They will spend Secondary 3 and 4 at NYGHS and proceed to JC 1 and 2 at HCJC without taking the O level examinations. The IP will further enhance NYGHS secondary education programme through its collaboration with partner schools and an alignment of curriculum with HCJC and TCHS.
BACKGROUND
3. To provide a variety of programmes and routes to cater to the varied talents and aptitudes of our students, the Junior College/Upper Secondary Education Review Committee, chaired by then Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry & Education, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, recommended, among other things, the introduction of IP spanning upper secondary and JC education. The IP would cater to students who could do well in a less structured environment. It would free up time used to prepare students for the O level examinations to engage in broader learning experiences. The Committees recommendations were endorsed by Parliament in November 2002.
4. Then Minister for Education, RAdm (NS) Teo Chee Hean, announced at the fifth Principals' Appointment Ceremony on 30 December 2002 that the Ministry of Education approved the introduction of the IP in four schools, viz. the Raffles and Hwa Chong families of schools, National Junior College and Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) from 2004.
