FO 1091/70: Christmas Island

Continuation of FO 1091/40. Papers relating to the transfer of the government of the island from Singapore to Australia. Documents include a paper setting out the problems involved in the transfer, a Draft Order in Council for Interim Arrangements for the administration of justice, post office, income tax etc. during the hand-over period, a memorandum prepared by the legal division of the C.O., note of a meeting at the Commonwealth Relations Office, November 1957 to discuss the government of the island from January 1958, a statutory instrument ' Singapore. The Christmas Island Order in Council, 1957' that Christmas Island would be governed and administered as a separate colony and instructions to the administrator, December 1957. From the beginning of 1958 the island was detached from the Colony of Singapore and was administered directly from London, through the office of the Commissioner General in Singapore, pending its transfer to Australia.
