THE FOUR-STOREY ARCADE BUILDING - ONE OF SINGAPORE'S BEST KNOWN LANDMARKS IS TO  BE TORN DOWN AND MAKE WAY FOR DEVELOPMENT. THIS DIGNIFIED MOORISH-STYLE BUILDING WHICH WAS PUT UP IN 1909 BY THE ALKAFF FAMILY, WAS USED FOR SHOPS AND OFFICES. THE BUILDING WHICH STOOD OVER SINGAPORE'S WATERFRONT FOR FIVE GENERATIONS HAD SEEN MILLIONS OF SHIPS CALLING INTO PORT. A 17-FLOOR SHOPPING AND OFFICE BLOCK IS TO BE BUILT ON THE SITE WHICH IS NOW OWNED BY SINGAPURA DEVELOPMENTS. THE NEW BUILDING IS EXPECTED TO BE COMLETED BY THE END OF 1980.
The Alkaff Arcade's original building with classic arches and Dutch gables was designed by David McLeod Craik. In the 1920s, the building was given a makeover featuring Moorish arches and domes before being re-developed into a shopping and office block in 1978.
