MANDALAY VILLA AT AMBER ROAD IN KATONG (C.1950S)
Front view of Mandalay Villa at No. 29 Amber Road. Built in 1902 as a holiday resort by prominent Peranakan businessman Lee Cheng Yan, the beautiful bungalow was designed by Lermit & Westerhout and later became residence of his son and successor Lee Choon Guan. With its fanciful facade, it was well known for parties thrown by Mrs Lee Choon Guan, or Madam Tan Teck Neo, which brought the Chinese and British communities together in those days when they seldom mixed.
