WHAT INFORMATION AND SERVICES DOES ARCHIVES ONLINE PROVIDE?

Archives Online provides information and services like:

  • Inventory listings of archival records of different media
  • Administrative history and brief description of government agencies' function. (This helps researchers identify relevant records by understanding the way records are created, such as the agency's mandate and functions.)
  • Find out about conditions governing access to the records and the conditions governing reproduction of the records
  • Viewing of selected digitised records, such as photographs, posters, speeches, cartographic records, oral history interviews and audio-visual recordings from home
  • Request to view archival records on-site and request for copies of archival records where permitted via the e-Request system

HOW CAN I VIEW ARCHIVAL RECORDS?

Many archival records such as images, press releases, and selected oral history material can be viewed/listened to from home. However, if there are records which cannot be viewed online, please click on the “Request to View” button and submit a request via NAS e-Request system.

WHAT IS THE NAS E-REQUEST SYSTEM?

The NAS e-Request system is a website for users to submit their marriage, school, and archival record requests. It also allows users to track the status of their requests.

Services that NAS offers via the e-Request system includes:

  • Requests to view archival records on-site.
  • Requests for copies of archival records.
  • Searches for school records of individuals to verify education details based on records that were transferred to the National Archives of Singapore.
  • Searches for marriage records for civil marriages registered before 15 September 1961.

Closed on Public Holidays

Staffed Service Hours:
Weekdays: 10am – 6.30pm
Staff service not available on Saturdays, Sundays, Public Holidays and substituted Public Holidays
Closed at 1pm on eves of Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year

WILL THE READING ROOM AT LEE KONG CHIAN REFERENCE LIBRARY (LKCRL) REMAIN OPEN?

Yes, the Reading Room at LKCRL will remain in operation. However, only access to some services will be available. Please see question below for details.

CAN I REPRODUCE RECORDS FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES? WHAT ARE THE CHARGES FOR REPRODUCTION?

Printing service for microfilms and digital records are available in ARR for only open-access archival records.

Photography with personal device for open-access archival records is also allowed.

IS THERE FACILITATED ACCESS FOR THE DISABLED AT THE ARCHIVES READING ROOM (ARR)?

Wheelchair access is available at both the ARR and the Reading Room at LKCRL. A washroom for wheelchair users is also available.

WHAT MATERIALS AM I ALLOWED TO BRING INTO AT THE ARCHIVES READING ROOM (ARR)? ARE THERE LOCKER FACILITIES?

You are allowed to bring in writing materials, laptop and your valuables into ARR.

Yes, locker facilities are available for your convenience.

ARE FOOD AND DRINKS ALLOWED IN THE ARCHIVES READING ROOM (ARR)?

No food or drinks except plain water in secured bottles are allowed into ARR.

WHAT MATERIALS AM I ALLOWED TO BRING INTO THE READING ROOM AT LEE KONG CHIAN REFERENCE LIBRARY (LKCRL)? ARE THERE LOCKER FACILITIES?

As the Reading Room at LKCRL is also a shared space where National Library patrons view rare materials, please note that no food or drinks, including bottled water, are allowed to be brought into the Reading Room. Only pencils, paper, laptops and your valuables can be brought in.

No bags are allowed and must be kept in lockers, which are available at the LKCRL.

ARE PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO RECORDING ALLOWED AT THE ARCHIVES READING ROOM (ARR) AND READING ROOM AT LEE KONG CHIAN REFERENCE LIBRARY (LKCRL)?

Photography and videography of records are only allowed with permission from NAS staff. Please refer to the emails sent to you or ask the archivist on duty.

CAN I USE MY MOBILE PHONE AT THE ARCHIVES READING ROOM (ARR) AND READING ROOM AT LEE KONG CHIAN REFERENCE LIBRARY (LKCRL)?

Mobile phones must be switched to the silent mode in the ARR.

Please be considerate when using a mobile phone and step out of ARR when making or answering a call.

WHO CAN I CONTACT IF I HAVE LOST SOMETHING AFTER LEAVING THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF SINGAPORE?

If you lose something during your visit, please approach the Archives Reading Room staff for assistance. Please email nas@nlb.gov.sg for assistance if you realised you lost something after you have left.
