This 78rpm shellac record is the earliest record from the sound archive collection that was acquired by the National Archives of Singapore from Mr Ross Stuart Laird in 2015. A professional sound archivist and researcher, Mr Laird has published a book on the early history of the Australian record industry, as well as several discographies. For over 10 years, he amassed an extensive collection of memorabilia, research materials and over 3,000 music records related to the history of Singapore’s record industry. The collection dates from 1903 to the 1980s, and traces the entire span of history when Singapore was the hub of the recording industry in Southeast Asia. Highlights include more than 100 examples of pre-World War II recordings made in Singapore, in particular one of the first recordings produced in Singapore in 1903; one-of-a-kind materials like private photographs and personal papers belonging to former recording artists; and a comprehensive list of artists and groups that recorded in Singapore during this period.
